Traffic Tickets

Highway Traffic Act and provincial offence defence to protect your driving record, your insurance rates and your demerit points.

Paying a ticket is a guilty plea. It registers a conviction on your driving record, and the fine is often the smallest part of the cost — the insurance consequences typically run for three years and can exceed the fine several times over.

Provincial offences are prosecuted under the Provincial Offences Act in the Ontario Court of Justice. Common charges include speeding, careless driving, distracted driving, failing to remain, driving while suspended, and stunt driving or racing — which carries roadside licence suspension and vehicle impoundment at the time of the stop.

For commercial drivers and anyone whose employment depends on a clean abstract, the analysis is different again: demerit points, CVOR consequences and employer reporting all have to be weighed before deciding how to plead.

We review disclosure, attend the early resolution meeting or trial, and advise on whether a reduced charge, a plea to a lesser offence, or a trial is the appropriate course in your circumstances.
