After a serious injury the legal process is running whether or not you are ready for it. Insurers open files, adjusters call, and statutory deadlines start to move. Getting advice early matters, because some of those deadlines are short and unforgiving.

An Ontario motor vehicle claim usually has two halves. The accident benefits claim runs against your own insurer and covers treatment, attendant care and income replacement regardless of fault. The tort claim runs against the at-fault driver for pain and suffering, loss of income and out-of-pocket costs. They move on different timetables and both have to be handled.

Occupiers' liability claims — slips, falls and unsafe premises — have their own notice requirements, and a written notice missed early can end a claim that was otherwise sound. Municipal claims are tighter still.
